SPRING EQUINOX SCAVENGER HUNT 10:00 – 11:00a.m., Environmental Center, Islip.  It’s the END of winter!  Join the Seatuck Environmental Associations’ Peter Walsh for a challenging scavenger hunt that will have every member of the family looking for signs of spring and various natural (and unnatural) items.  Get outside, observe the seasonal changes, and celebrate the Vernal Equinox!  A fee of $4/members, $6/nonmembers will apply to all programs at the Suffolk County Environmental Center.  Pre-registration is REQUIRED.  Please call (631) 581-6908 to register or for more information.

IS SPRING ON THE WAY?  10:00a.m. – 1:00p.m., Blydenburgh County Park, Smithtown.  Join the Seatuck Environmental Association for a 6.5 mile moderately – paced hike around Stump Pond in Blydenburgh County Park.  Pass through diverse habitats along the park’s slightly sandy and relatively flat trails and look for signs of Spring.  Bring lunch/snack and water.  Free.  Pre-registration is REQUIRED.  Please call (631) 581-6908 to register or for more information.

REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS OF LONG ISLAND 7:00 – 9:00p.m., Environmental Center, Islip.  Join Dr. Russell Burke of Hofstra University for this overview of the many slimy and scaly creatures that call Long Island home.  He’ll review our local reptiles and amphibians and discuss some surprising things that new research is teaching us about some of them.  (This program is part of the 2010 Novice Naturalist Lecture Series.)  Presented by Seatuck Environmental Association.  A fee of $4/members, $6/nonmembers will apply to all programs at the Suffolk County Environmental Center.  Pre-registration is REQURIED.  Please call (631) 581-6908 to register or for more information.

GEOCACHING 101 11:00a.m. at Gardner County Park, West Bay Shore.  Did you get a GPS (Global Positioning System) unit as a gift, but not sure what to do with it?  Join the Seatuck Environmental Association’s Tom Vitti for an introduction to geocaching!  In this high-tech treasure hunt, we’ll use GPS units to find a hidden container.  The whole family can get in on the fun!  Geocaching is a good way to get outside and enjoy nature.  Free.  Pre-registration is REQUIRED.  Please call (631) 581-6908 to register or for more information.
